Vanessa Contenay-Quinones/Vanessa & The O'sVanessa Contenay-Quinones is French, Paris born and bred. She grew up with the sounds of 60's French pop found sneaking through her dad's vinyl collection. Gainsbourg, Francoise Hardy, Polnaref, Dutronc held sway over the faves of the day.
Rock & Roll, Elvis, Eddie Cochrane, Doo-Wop, Billie Holliday and Scott Walker also lived on her personal compilations making her something of an outsider as the only 'Teddy Girl' at a strict convent school so she quit at 16 to start on her career in music.
Finding the french music scene of the time a little uninspiring it was the sound of Manchester and London that caught her ear and pretty soon Vanessa took her songs and beats & groove ideas and moved to London. Within a year she had signed an album deal with Jeff Barratt's ‘Heavenly Records' releasing her first largely self produced album 'Manifesto' under the name Espiritu, a melodic latin/hiphop/beats & cut-ups fusion. Pretty soon she was denting the UK top 50 with four singles hitting the chart including the Espiritu/Tin Tin Out dance mashup ‘Always' scraping the national UK top 10!
When Heavenly moved to ‘Deconstruction Records' Vanessa went along releasing her second self produced album 'Another Life,' an experiment in 'underground drum & bass pop' which includes collaborations with 'A Guy Called Gerald' and 'Monkey Mafia' amongst others, again to critical acclaim [being the first to add a full string section to drum & bass grooves!]. This sound being a little too experimental for wide consumer taste Vanessa parted company with Deconstruction and set about writing a new set of songs exploring a more guitar inspired sound, drawring on early influences Gainsbourg, early Stones, Marianne Faithful, Nico, Lou Reed and the Velvets.
(In 2004 Vanessa actually recorded an electro-pop version of Velvets classic 'Sunday Morning' with Lou in a NY studio, swapping french phrases with Lou, a first for the legend!)
Vanessa hooked up with Swedish artist/composer duo Andreas Mattson [Popsicle] and Niclas Frisk [Atomic Swing] around this time after hearing their work on Cardigan Nena's ‘A Camp' album and with the addition of James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins co-founder) soon after VANESSA & THE O'S was born!
Mixing french and english lyrics with dreamy melodic guitar pop, The O's spent 18 months writing and recording on a mac portable in hotel rooms and apartments in Paris, Stockholm, New York and London releasing the limited edition EP 'PLUS RIEN' on Swedish indie Dolores before mixing debut album ‘La Ballade d'O' with HIVES producer Pelle Gunnerfeldt in Stockholm.
By the summer of 2007 the album was released on the bands own label Rushmore Recordings worldwide, with rave reviews from Rock & Folk [Disc du Mois], Les Inrockuptibles, Figaro [Palmeres Rock Pop], Magic, StrangeDays Japan and a Rough Trade UK Album Of The Week amongst many other accolades (see press page).
Described by Rough Trade as "a fantastic album of european cool with breathy vocals in english and french over music that sounds like The Concretes, Stereo lab or a more modern take on the Velvet Underground..." and by Les Inrockuptibles as an "...epatant album d'ultra pop, entre Bardot et le Velvet.."
In 2006 Vanessa was invited to be the guest vocalist on Scott Walker's album The Drift.
In 2007 Vanessa & The O's contributed a track to the Ennio Morricone tribute album ‘We All Love Ennio Morricone' alongside Springsteen, Metallica, Quincy Jones and the maestro himself.
2010 and Vanessa and Andreas have completed writing and recording of 12 new songs for the new yet to be titled album working with Markus Jagerstedt and Pelle Gunnerfeldt in Stockholm.
STOP PRESS: Vanessa's 60's french pop influenced solo project 'Vanessa presents Allez Pop' is up and running with the song 'Bon Bon Bon' featured in summer 2010 blockbuster 'Killers' ft Ashton Kutcher & Katherine Heigl. The 'Allez Pop' album will be released on November 22nd by Pedigree Cuts (see Vanessa solo page)
